The solenoid controlling a variable-displacement oil pump's output, faulty so the pump can no longer be commanded to the pressure the engine needs. The pump is mechanically fine — modern engines vary oil pressure deliberately to reduce parasitic loss, and this valve is how they do it.

Its failure direction decides how serious it is. Failing toward high pressure wastes power and stresses the filter and seals, but the engine is lubricated. Failing toward low pressure is the dangerous one, and it produces exactly the readings of a worn pump or worn bearings — which is why this solenoid deserves checking before either of those conclusions is reached.

It is a small valve in a dirty environment and blocks more often than it fails electrically. A fine screen behind it catches debris and clogs. Compare commanded pressure against actual across a range of speeds: a pressure that does not follow the command while the circuit tests sound is the valve or its screen, and both are far cheaper to address than the pump. Oil condition is the underlying factor in most of these.
