A sensor that is electrically perfect and physically in the wrong place. It is a genuine cause rather than a formality, because for a whole class of sensors the mounting is the measurement.

Inertial sensors are the clearest case. A yaw or acceleration sensor measures motion along its own axes, so it must be bolted rigidly, the right way up, and facing the direction it was designed for. Loosen it and it reports its own vibration; rotate it and it attributes sideways motion to the wrong axis. Neither produces an electrical fault, and both make stability control act on a false picture.

The way it usually happens is repair work. These modules sit low and central — under a seat, beneath the console, on the tunnel — so they are disturbed by interior work, seat removal, carpet repairs after a leak, and accident damage. Check the bracket and the fixings before the part. A sensor swinging on one bolt looks fitted.
