A transmission repaired or rebuilt without clearing the adaptations the module learned from the old one. Modern transmissions learn continuously — clutch fill times, pressures and shift durations drift as friction material wears, and the module compensates so shift quality stays constant.

Those learned corrections are wrong for new components. Applied to fresh clutches, the compensation built up for worn ones makes shifts harsh, slow or slipping — and the module, seeing a shift that does not match its expectation, stores performance codes on a transmission that has just been rebuilt.

Clearing codes is not the same as resetting adaptations, and this is the trap: the learned values live in a separate area and survive a code clear and often a battery disconnection. The reset is a specific command and usually needs a capable tool, followed by a defined relearn drive cycle. Establish that it was done before diagnosing a newly repaired transmission — it is the commonest reason a competent rebuild appears to have failed immediately.
