Isuzu 6H-series (6HE1 / 6HK1)

Isuzu's medium-duty diesel straight-six — the 7.1 6HE1 and 7.8 6HK1 — in the F-series lorries and in a great deal of industrial and marine equipment.

This is a commercial engine and the standards around it are different. It is designed for a working life measured in the hundreds of thousands of kilometres under load, serviced on hours as much as on distance, and rebuilt rather than replaced.

The 6HK1 is common-rail on later vehicles, and the modern diesel rules apply — but the duty cycle changes which ones bite. A lorry that idles for hours and runs short delivery legs is the worst case for a particulate filter, and on these the regeneration is often driver-initiated rather than automatic. An operator who ignores the lamp is the commonest root cause.

Injector and injector-harness faults are the recurring electrical item, and they set cylinder-specific codes worth trusting.
