Jatco's transverse five-speed — and one of the most widely rebadged gearboxes on this site: it is in the Land Rover Freelander, the Mazda6 and MPV, and — as the 09A — in the Volkswagen Golf, Sharan and Beetle.

A Land Rover owner, a Mazda owner and a VW owner researching their five-speed automatic are researching one Japanese transmission, and none of their own literature says so. Establishing that is worth more than any single fault below, because it multiplies the available information several times over.

Its dominant failure is the valve body and the D-clutch drum. The symptom sequence is a flare or slip on the 2–3 change, then harsh engagement, then a limp mode — and it is very often blamed on the clutch packs when the pressure feeding them is what has failed.

The Freelander's reputation is largely this gearbox, and much of it is heat: a heavy vehicle, a compact transmission, and the fluid doing the work.

Fluid is specific to each badge and none of them is a generic ATF — Land Rover, Mazda and Volkswagen each specify their own, and using the wrong one produces exactly the harsh engagement above.
