Volkswagen 02J / 02M

Volkswagen's transverse manual transaxles — the five-speed 02J and six-speed 02M — in the Golf Mk4 and the Audi TT 8N.

The 02M is not a six-speed 02J. They are different gearboxes with different cases and different internals, and the 02M is much the stronger — which is why it went behind the turbocharged and four-wheel-drive cars and why it is the popular swap.

The 02J's characteristic failure is the differential and its bearings, producing a whine that rises with road speed and is present in every gear including with the clutch pressed while rolling. That combination separates it from gear noise, which changes when the gear does, and from a wheel bearing, which changes with cornering load.

Shift quality complaints are usually the linkage. The cables and their bushings wear, producing a change that is long and vague and reads as a worn gearbox — a fraction of the cost of anything inside.

Both take a specific VW gear oil (G50/G52) rather than a conventional 80W-90, and a wrongly filled one is notchy when cold and hard into second. That symptom has now appeared on six gearboxes in this catalogue across six marques, and it is never the synchros.
