Damaged actuator linkage
The mechanical connection between a transmission actuator and what it moves — a lever, rod or cable bent, worn loose or seized. The motor does its work and the motion arrives wrong: shifts stall part-way, positions read misaligned, and the electrical side tests clean because it is clean.
Cheap to inspect and commonly disturbed by other work — check it before condemning the actuator on either side of it.
Typically a moderate job.
