Drive cycle for learning not completed

The learning drive cycle begun but never finished, so adaptation is incomplete. The reset is only half the procedure — the module then has to observe the new components across a defined range of speeds, loads and temperatures before its values mean anything.

A partly-learned transmission shifts badly and stores performance codes, which reads as a failed repair rather than an unfinished one. The cycle is specific: a range of gears at defined throttle openings, often from cold and often over several miles, and a vehicle handed back after a short road test has not done it. Check the module's own learning status where the tool exposes it, which distinguishes an incomplete cycle from a genuine fault and is far quicker than re-diagnosing.

Typically an easy fix. Often worth checking before paying anyone to look.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
