Faulty driveline disconnect switch
The switch requesting a driveline disconnect — a front axle, a transfer case or a differential lock — faulty so the request is misread. It is the input rather than any part of the driveline, and a fault here disables a mechanically perfect system.
A module that cannot read the request will not act on it, and rightly so: engaging or disengaging a driveline at the wrong moment is damaging. The complaint is a selector that does nothing. These switches are console-mounted or on the transfer case itself, so spilled drinks or road salt account for most failures. Watch the reported state through the whole switch travel — one that flickers, sticks or reports two positions is the fault, and a static check at one setting will not show it.
