Fuel tank run very low
The tank run low enough that the pump draws air on cornering, braking or a gradient. The pickup sits at the bottom of the tank and the fuel moves around it, so a low level is intermittent starvation rather than a steady shortage.
The signature is misfires and pressure faults that follow the vehicle's attitude — a roundabout, a hill, hard braking — and clear on a refill. It is worth taking at face value when the reported level is low, since the alternative diagnoses are all expensive. It also runs the pump hot: fuel is the pump's coolant, so habitual running near empty shortens its life, which is worth telling an owner whose complaint keeps returning.
