Cause

Loss of fuel rail pressure overnight

Rail pressure bleeding away while the vehicle stands, so the first start of the day is long. A healthy high pressure system holds much of its pressure for hours, which is what makes a quick restart possible; a system that empties has to build from nothing on the starter.

The complaint is a hard start after standing and an easy one after a short stop — the clearest possible signature, and one owners describe accurately. Where it leaks decides the repair: a leaking injector returns fuel to the tank quietly, a failed non-return valve in the pump lets the rail drain back, and a leaking high pressure line shows externally. Measure how quickly rail pressure decays after shutdown, then isolate by blocking the return — that separates injectors from pump in one test.

Typically a moderate job.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
