Also known as: 834b, f105l, lancia thema engine, 2.0 turbo lancia

The petrol engines of the Lancia Thema — the 2.0 834B four and the 2.9 F105L V6.

They are Fiat group engines under a Lancia badge, which is the useful route in when Lancia material runs out — as it does quickly outside Italy. The 834B is a Fiat twin-cam, one of the longest-lived four-cylinder designs in Europe.

The Thema is also the car that carried a Ferrari V8 in the 8.32, which is a different engine entirely and not this page's subject — worth stating because it dominates every search for a Thema engine.

Their complaints are the era's: belt-driven interference designs on cars now forty years old, distributors that fail with heat, and vacuum systems that have perished.

Parts are the constraint and the survivors are largely in enthusiast hands, which is where the knowledge is too.

1 generation, across 1 make. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
