Li Auto's 1.5 turbocharged four — a range extender — in the L7 and L9.

⚑ It never drives the wheels. It turns a generator and nothing else: there is no gearbox behind it, no driveshaft, and no mechanical connection to the road at all. Every complaint about acceleration, shifting or drivability on one of these cars belongs to the electric drive system, and diagnosing them at the engine is looking in the wrong half of the car.

What that changes about the engine is the duty cycle. It runs at the speeds and loads the control strategy chooses rather than the ones a driver would, which is gentler in some ways and much more repetitive in others.

Everything about the high-voltage system applies here and applies hard. These are large battery packs, and the precautions a purely combustion car does not need are mandatory on this one.

It is very new and there is no long-term record.

Cars fitted with this engine

2 generations, across 1 make. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
