Mercedes-Benz OM646
2.1 L · inline-4 · turbocharged · diesel · 2002–2010
Also known as: om646, 2.1 cdi, 220 cdi w203, om646 de 22 la, 200 cdi w211
The four-cylinder diesel that preceded the OM651 — fitted to the W203 and W204 C-Class, the W211 E-Class, the Sprinter and the Vito, and generally regarded as more robust than the engine that replaced it.
The distinction matters. The OM651's rear timing chain and its expensive failure dominate any search for a Mercedes four-cylinder diesel problem, and none of that applies here — the OM646's chain arrangement is not the same and its reputation is markedly better. Confirm which engine is fitted before repeating any of it.
What the OM646 does bring is injector wear, which presents as a rough cold idle and a knocking sound, and — on higher-mileage examples — the crankshaft position sensor and the turbocharger's variable-geometry mechanism sticking with carbon. On the Sprinter and Vito in commercial use, the duty cycle rather than the mileage is what determines condition.

Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
