Nissan YD25 (with the YS23, 2.3 and 2.5)
2.5 L · inline-4 · turbocharged · diesel · 2001–present
Also known as: yd25ddti, 2.5 dci, navara engine, yd engine, 2.5 ddti, yd25ddt, ys23ddt, ys23
Nissan's 2.5-litre common-rail diesel — the engine of the Navara, Pathfinder and X-Trail, and a workhorse in markets where those vehicles do heavy duty.
Its known and expensive failure is the timing chain, which on this engine drives from the front but wears fast enough on some build ranges to be a defining characteristic. The failure sequence is worth knowing: a stretched chain lets the tensioner extend, the chain contacts the front cover, and in the worst case it wears through into the coolant passage — so a chain problem on a YD25 can present as coolant loss or oil-and-coolant mixing rather than as a timing complaint. That symptom is routinely misread as a head gasket.
Injector and EGR faults are the other theme, aggravated where fuel quality is poor, and heavy carbon in the intake manifold is normal at mileage rather than exceptional.

5 generations, across 1 make. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.
Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
