Porsche MA1 / 9A1
flat-6 · naturally aspirated · petrol · 2008–2019
Also known as: ma1, 9a1, dfi flat-six, 3.4 dfi, 3.8 dfi, 997.2 engine, 991 engine
The flat-six that replaced the M96/M97 — direct-injected, with the intermediate shaft removed entirely and the camshafts driven directly from the crankshaft. That single change eliminated the IMS bearing failure that dominates its predecessor's reputation.
That is the most useful thing to know about it, because IMS material dominates any search for a Porsche flat-six problem and none of it applies here. Confirming which engine a 997 has — the earlier 997.1 uses M97, the later 997.2 uses 9A1 — changes the whole risk picture of the car.
The 9A1's own themes are ordinary for a modern direct-injection engine: intake-valve carbon at mileage, high-pressure fuel-pump wear, and on the turbocharged versions the usual dependence on oil condition. Bore scoring persisted as a much-reduced concern on some versions rather than disappearing outright.

Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
