Toyota 1N / 1N-T
1.5 L · inline-4 · turbocharged · diesel · 1986–present
Also known as: 1n-t, 1n, 1nt, n-series diesel
Toyota's 1N — a 1.5 diesel for small cars, and the turbocharged 1N-T beside it, in the Starlet and the diesel Tercel.
⚑ It is not an L-series and that is the whole difficulty. Toyota's famous small diesels are the 1L through 5L, they have their own page here, and they share no parts with this engine — but almost every search for a small Toyota diesel returns them. The N was built for a much smaller car and is a separate design.
A 1.5 diesel is a small engine by any standard, and its output is correspondingly modest; the turbocharged version exists because the naturally aspirated one was barely adequate.
Everything is mechanical — an injection pump, glow plugs, compression — and the belt is an interference design on cars now thirty years old.
It was sold in few markets and almost nothing about it exists in English. Japanese-market material is the practical source.

Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.
What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
