Toyota SZ (1SZ / 2SZ)
inline-4 · naturally aspirated · petrol · 1999–present
Also known as: 1sz-fe, 2sz-fe, 1sz, 2sz, yaris 1.0 engine
Toyota's smallest fours — the 1.0 1SZ, 1.3 2SZ and 1.5 3SZ — in the Yaris, Echo, Platz and, badged Daihatsu, a long list of others.
⚑ The 1.0 1SZ-FE is a FOUR-cylinder, not a three, which catches people out because every other one-litre engine in this catalogue has three. An owner told their car has a three-cylinder has been told about the 1KR that replaced it, which is a different engine in the same model.
It is chain-driven and port-injected, so there is no belt to schedule and no direct-injection carbon to expect.
Its complaints are the small-engine set: a carboned throttle body giving a hunting idle, ignition coils failing one at a time, and a coolant temperature sensor that ruins economy without setting anything anybody notices. Very few of these are worth an expensive repair, which is usually what decides the outcome.
Cars fitted with this engine
3 generations, across 2 makes. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
