P0300 with no cylinder code: pull the freeze frame before the coils

HO @hhh 1 month ago
A random-misfire code with no P0301–P0306 alongside it means the misfires are spread across cylinders, and that changes the suspect list completely. One cylinder misfiring is that cylinder's coil, plug or injector. All of them misfiring is something they share.

Start with the freeze frame — it recorded engine speed, load and temperature at the moment the code set. A misfire counted only at cold start points somewhere different from one at hot idle, and one at motorway load points somewhere different again.

The shared systems worth checking, in the order they usually pay off:

- Fuel pressure. A tired pump or a clogged filter starves every cylinder equally, and shows up worst under load.
- Unmetered air. A vacuum leak leans the whole engine at idle — P0300 and P0171 arriving together is usually that one story. The P0171 guide on this site covers the fuel-trim test that finds it.
- The plugs, as a set. Past their interval they have all aged together, and worn plugs misfire under load first.
- EGR stuck partly open at idle — exhaust where air should be, every cylinder affected at once.

If you do suspect ignition, make the parts prove it: swap one coil to another cylinder and see whether a cylinder-specific code follows the coil on the next drive. A swap test costs nothing and turns a guess into evidence.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.
