Ford Cleveland V8 (351C / 400)

Ford's 351 Cleveland and the 400 beside it — the 335 family, in Mustangs, Torinos, the F-series and Australian Falcons.

⚑ It is not the 351 Windsor, and the two share a displacement and almost nothing else. Different heads, different block, different water passages, different bellhousing bolt pattern on some applications. Ordering parts for one and fitting the other is the best-known mistake in American V8 work, and both have pages here.

Telling them apart is a five-second job: the Cleveland's thermostat housing bolts to the block, the Windsor's to the intake manifold. Establish that before anything else.

Its big-port heads are why it is famous and why it breathes better at high speed than a Windsor — and why it is soft below about 3,000 rpm in standard road tune, which owners frequently report as a fault.

Australia kept it in production long after North America stopped, so a great deal of the surviving parts supply and knowledge is Australian and files under Falcon rather than under Mustang.
