Hyundai's transverse six-speed in a Jeep — the Compass MK and Patriot MK74.
A Jeep with a Hyundai gearbox is the sort of thing neither company's literature mentions, and on these two models it matters more than usual: the alternative fitment was a CVT with a poor reputation, so establishing which is in the car changes both the diagnosis and what it is worth.
The tell is behaviour rather than a label. A conventional automatic steps between ratios and the engine note steps with it; the CVT slides. A Compass whose revs rise and hold under acceleration has the CVT, and none of the advice on this page applies to it.
Its own faults are Hyundai's: the valve body and its solenoids, presenting electrically — a gear refused, a limp mode, a code naming a solenoid — rather than by slipping. Nothing slips first.
The fluid is Hyundai's SP-IV, not a Chrysler specification, which is exactly the mistake a workshop reading the badge would make.
