Toyota's transverse eight-speed — in the Camry XV70 and the Highlander XU50.

It is the automatic in the cars whose siblings got the K120 CVT, which is the distinction that matters: a Camry of these years may have either, and they have nothing in common — one is a torque-converter automatic with eight fixed ratios, the other a belt CVT with a launch gear.

A shudder from rest therefore means completely different things on the two, and the advice does not transfer. Establishing which is fitted comes before anything else, and the tell is whether the engine note steps with the road speed or slides.

Its recurring complaint is a firm or hesitant 1–2 change, which responds to adaptation and to software far more often than to parts — Toyota has issued transmission control updates for exactly this.

Fluid is Toyota's WS, and on a transmission this new most examples are still on their first fill; the interval is real whatever the handbook implies.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
