Vehicle
Buick Lucerne
The full-size front-drive saloon that replaced the LeSabre and Park Avenue, sharing GM's H-body with the DTS. Two engines, and the choice decides the diagnosis entirely. The 3.8 Series III V6 is the durable one, with the family's usual upper intake manifold gasket question. The 4.6 Northstar V8 is not, and its defining problem is head-bolt threads pulling out of the aluminium block — presenting as coolant loss, pressurised expansion tank and eventually overheating, with compression that can still test acceptable. Diagnosing a Northstar coolant complaint as a gasket without checking for thread pull is the classic wrong turn on this car.

3.8 Series III or 4.6 Northstar; the Northstar's head-bolt threads pulling from the alloy block is the fault to rule out first.

Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
