Vehicle

Jaguar XJ

The aluminium flagship saloon, and the Jaguar with the longest module list — air suspension, adaptive dampers and a full comfort suite, each storing its own faults. As on any car this networked, a marginal battery manufactures a screenful of plausible-looking codes.

Generations

  • X300 1994–1997

The last straight-six XJ and the last V12, on the XJ40 floorpan. Both engines lose their distributor for coil packs, so an ignition misfire is traced at the pack rather than a cap and rotor, and every V12 and almost every supercharged XJR was built with the GM four-speed rather than a ZF.

  • X308 1997–2002

The first V8 XJ and the last car on the XJ40 floorpan — no manual gearbox and no six or twelve at all. The plastic timing chain tensioners are the fault that decides one of these: a cold start-up rattle that ends in a jumped chain, and whether the revised metal tensioners are fitted is the single most useful fact about a given engine.

  • X350 2002–2009

Aluminium monocoque, riveted and bonded rather than spot-welded, on self-levelling air suspension — so both the body repair method and the ride-height faults are unlike any steel XJ before it. The 2.7 diesel is the European volume engine, and the 2007 facelift carries the internal code X358.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
