Mercury Montego

The 2005-2007 saloon, and a rebadged Ford Five Hundred on the Volvo-derived D3 platform — so Five Hundred and later Taurus information covers it entirely, which matters because almost nothing was written under the Montego name. The 3.0 Duratec is the only engine. The item that defines the car is the transmission: most were built with a CVT supplied by ZF, and its fluid specification is unusual and non-negotiable — the wrong fluid destroys it, and a ratio-error or pressure code is often the first sign that somebody has already used it. The Haldex-style all-wheel-drive coupling on so-equipped cars is a separate service item.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
