The switch requesting a power take-off, faulty so the engagement is not commanded or is commanded when it should not be. A power take-off drives auxiliary equipment from the engine or gearbox on commercial vehicles, and its engagement is interlocked with the transmission and often the parking brake.

A module that cannot read the request will not act on it, and correctly so — engaging a take-off at the wrong moment is mechanically damaging and potentially dangerous to somebody working on the equipment. The complaint is auxiliary equipment that will not run, with the vehicle otherwise normal.

The reverse fault is the serious one. A switch reporting engagement when none was requested can leave the module inhibiting the transmission or holding an interlock, so the vehicle will not drive. These switches are usually in-cab and heavily used, so worn contacts and a corroded connector are the likeliest causes — watch the reported state through the full switch travel rather than testing at one position.
