Chrysler A523 / A568

Chrysler's five-speed transverse manual transaxles — the A523 and the heavy-duty A568, behind the 2.2 and 2.5 fours in the K-car derivatives, the Spirit and Acclaim, and the minivans.

⚑ The A series numbers the automatics as well, and a code quoted without its kind is genuinely ambiguous: the A413 from the very same cars is a three-speed automatic and has its own page here. Read the kind before the number.

The A568 is the heavy-duty one, and it is what the turbocharged cars were given. The A523 sits below it, and the A543 is close enough that the factory documents all three together.

It does not share a shifter with the earlier A520 and A525. Reverse moved, so the pattern differs — and a swap needs the later gearbox's own shifter and cables, which is the part people discover after the transaxle is already in the car.

As a cable-shifted transverse manual its recurring items are the ordinary ones — the clutch and its release bearing, the shift cables and their bushes, and the input shaft seal — and a vague or notchy shift is far more often linkage than gearbox.
