Ford F-250 Super Duty
The heavy-duty truck line, and it is a different vehicle from the F-150 despite the name — different frame, different axles, different engines, and a separate service literature. Diagnosis is dominated by which diesel is fitted. The 6.0 Power Stroke is the one with the reputation: head gasket failure driven by stretching head bolts, EGR cooler cracking, and an oil-driven injection system whose high-pressure oil rail leaks make it crank without starting. The 6.4 adds a pair of turbochargers and a diesel particulate filter with its own regeneration faults, and the 6.7 from 2011 is Ford's own design and a substantially better one. The 7.3 before all of them is mechanically simple and the most durable of the family.

PHN131 1999–2019
The first Super Duty, and the longest-lived: North America stopped in 2007 and Brazil went on building it until 2019, which is why its engine list holds two South American diesels the US truck never had. The 7.3 Power Stroke gives way to the 6.0 in 2003, and that change is the one that matters most on this generation.

Ford stops buying its diesel in and builds the 6.7 Power Stroke itself, and the petrol V8 becomes the 6.2 Boss. The six-speed 6R140 arrives with them; the old five-speed stays only on the chassis cabs with the V10.

Fifth generation (P708) 2023–present
The 6.2 Boss gives way to a 6.8 Godzilla, so both petrol V8s are now the same family at two sizes, and every gearbox is a ten-speed. The 6.7 Power Stroke gains a High-Output version above the standard one.
