Ford Freestyle
The tall estate on the Volvo-derived D3 platform, renamed Taurus X for its last two years — so the same vehicle appears under two names in records three years apart, which is worth knowing before a search comes back empty. It is not the Taurus saloon and shares only its underpinnings with it. The gearbox is the subject here: these were among the few American cars fitted with a ZF continuously variable transmission, an unusual and expensive unit whose behaviour a technician expecting a conventional automatic will misread, and whose fluid specification and service intervals are its own. The 2008-2009 Taurus X swapped it for a six-speed automatic along with the 3.5 Duratec, so the two halves of this page behave quite differently.
