Cause

Failed NOx adsorber

The NOx trap genuinely at the end of its useful life, no longer storing oxides of nitrogen. It is the conclusion of last resort, because sulphur poisoning, incomplete purge cycles and a faulty NOx sensor all produce the same efficiency code far more often and cost far less.

Ageing is thermal. The storage coating sinters at high temperature, permanently reducing surface area — so a trap that has been through repeated over-temperature events, or sat behind a misfiring engine, ages faster than its mileage suggests.

The evidence that separates it from a recoverable condition is a desulphation cycle that completes and changes nothing. Confirm the NOx sensors first, since a sensor reading incorrectly will condemn a healthy trap and is a fraction of the cost. Two sensors disagreeing about a trap that has just been successfully purged is the sequence that points at the trap rather than at anything cheaper.

Typically specialist work. Needs equipment or training most home workshops do not have.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
