Faulty air conditioning control module
The module controlling the air conditioning system, as distinct from the climate control panel the occupant touches and from the engine module that grants compressor requests. Three components can produce an air conditioning fault and confusing them means ordering the wrong one.
It is a networked node, so its faults surface elsewhere. The engine module asks it whether the compressor is needed and reports invalid data when the answer is implausible; the panel sends requests it does not act on. So an air conditioning module fault is often first noticed as a code stored in the engine module, which is the opposite of where the work is.
Rule out the system before the module. Refrigerant pressure outside its window, a failed pressure sensor, a seized compressor or a blown clutch fuse all cause the module to refuse operation — and refusing is correct. The module denies a request far more often than it fails, so establish that pressure and the compressor circuit are sound first; a system that is simply low on refrigerant will produce a module-level fault with nothing wrong electrically.
