P2611: Air Conditioning Refrigerant Distribution Valve A Control Circuit/Open

What to do

The car drives normally and nothing is at risk. What you will notice is air conditioning that works in one part of the vehicle and not the other — typically cold at the front and warm in the back.

The useful thing to know is that this is almost certainly not low refrigerant. A system short of gas cools badly everywhere. One zone working properly while the other does nothing points at the valve that routes refrigerant between them, and a regas will not change it. That is worth saying before anyone books one.

The fault is more often the wiring than the valve. The cabling to a rear unit runs under trim, along the sills or through the headlining, so it gets disturbed by seat removal, damaged by loads in the boot, or wet from a leaking seal — all commoner than the valve itself failing.

What this code means

An open circuit in the control of the valve that routes refrigerant between the air conditioning system's evaporators.

This code only exists on a vehicle with more than one evaporator — the rear air conditioning fitted to vans, larger estates, seven-seat MPVs and many SUVs. One compressor and one condenser feed two cooling units in different parts of the vehicle, and a distribution valve decides how much refrigerant goes where.

That architecture is what makes the symptom so distinctive and so useful. A fault here does not stop the air conditioning; it stops it somewhere. Cold air at the front and nothing at the back — or the reverse — is a distribution problem, not a refrigerant problem, and it is worth saying so plainly because the instinctive response to weak cooling is to have the system regassed. A system genuinely low on refrigerant cools poorly everywhere. One zone working normally is strong evidence that the charge is fine and the fault is in routing.

With the valve unpowered it sits in whatever position it defaults to, which is usually the front zone — so the common presentation is a rear compartment that stays warm while the front is unaffected.

Nothing about the engine changes, nothing is at risk, and the vehicle is entirely normal to drive. The failure is usually the connector or the wiring rather than the valve: these looms run under trim, along sills or through the headlining to reach a rear unit, which means they are disturbed by seat removal, load damage and water ingress far more often than an engine bay loom is.
