Faulty anti-lock braking module
The braking module itself at fault, as distinct from a sensor or the hydraulics it controls. It should be a late conclusion, because this module publishes wheel speed to the whole vehicle and therefore gets blamed for a great many faults that originate elsewhere.
Conventional braking is unaffected, which is worth telling a driver immediately: the hydraulics are mechanical, and a failed module means the anti-lock and stability functions withdraw rather than the brakes failing. The warning lamps for several systems illuminate together, because they all depend on it.
Check its supply and its sensors first. The module carries heavy feeds and its own fuses, and a module without power is indistinguishable from a dead one across the network. A single failed wheel speed sensor disables the whole function and is a fraction of the cost. Where the module is genuinely at fault, note that many are paired to the vehicle and require programming and a bleed procedure after replacement.
Typically specialist work. Needs equipment or training most home workshops do not have.
