U0415: Invalid Data Received From Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module

What to do

Your brakes still work normally — the pedal and the hydraulics are unaffected. What you have lost is the anti-lock function, so in an emergency stop or on a wet or icy road the wheels can lock and the car will slide instead of staying steerable.

So: leave more room, brake earlier and more gently, and take real care in the wet. Expect ABS, stability control and traction control lights on, and possibly a speedometer that reads oddly.

All of those warnings are very often one cheap part. This module reads the four wheel speed sensors and passes on what they say — and one failing sensor makes it report something impossible, which every other system then refuses to act on. That is why the dashboard looks catastrophic when the actual fault is small.

Do not let the ABS module be replaced before the wheel speed sensors have been checked. The module is expensive and usually innocent; a sensor, its wiring, or a damaged toothed ring behind it is far commoner and a fraction of the price.

This is the clearest illustration in the whole family of why the code names the messenger rather than the fault — and it is the one worth understanding properly.

The braking module's most-published value is wheel speed, and it is consumed by almost everything: stability control, traction control, the speedometer, the transmission, cruise control, hill-hold, tyre pressure monitoring and the electric parking brake. The module does not generate wheel speed. It reads four sensors and passes on what they say.

So an implausible wheel speed report is, overwhelmingly, a wheel speed sensor problem. One wheel reporting a speed the others contradict — stationary while the car moves, or wildly different mid-corner — is exactly what a failing sensor, a damaged reluctor ring or a contaminated sensor tip produces. The braking module is working perfectly and reporting a lie it was told.

That is why this code produces a dashboard full of unrelated warnings from one cheap part. ABS, stability control, traction control, hill-hold and the speedometer may all object at once — and every one of them is correctly refusing to act on a wheel speed it cannot believe.

The consequence for braking must be stated precisely, because it matters and is easily misunderstood: the brakes still work. The hydraulic system is unchanged and the pedal does what it always did. What is lost is the anti-lock function — so in an emergency stop, or on a wet or icy surface, the wheels can lock and the car will slide rather than remaining steerable. That is a real reduction in safety margin without being a reason to stop immediately.

So: leave more room, brake earlier, and take particular care in the wet. And expect the fault to be one sensor, not the module — the corpus's standing warning about replacing an expensive module named by a code applies here as strongly as anywhere.
