Cause

Faulty climate control module

The module running the heating and air conditioning system — as distinct from the panel or switches the occupant touches, which are separately coded in this corpus and are the commoner failure. Establishing which of the two a code names saves the wrong part being ordered, since on many vehicles they are one assembly and on many others they are not.

On a modern vehicle it is a networked node, not an isolated controller, which is why its faults surface as communication and invalid-data codes stored by other modules. Engine and body modules ask it about compressor demand and cabin conditions, and a module that answers implausibly or not at all is reported by whoever asked. So a climate module fault is often first noticed on a code stored elsewhere.

Rear units multiply this. A vehicle with separate front and rear climate control has two modules on the network, and codes distinguish them — reading a rear module's code as the front one's sends the work to the wrong end of the car. Before condemning any of them, rule out the network itself: a wiring fault or a fault elsewhere on the bus produces lost-communication codes naming a module that is in perfect health.

Typically specialist work. Needs equipment or training most home workshops do not have.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
