P2519: Air Conditioning Request A Circuit
What to do
Expect no air conditioning, and possibly no fault anywhere in the air conditioning system itself. The climate control panel does not switch the compressor on — it asks the engine module, and the engine module decides. This code says the request is not arriving, so the refrigerant, compressor and clutch may all be perfectly fine. Do not agree to a regas or a compressor on the strength of "no cold air" while this code is stored; ask for this circuit to be repaired first and the system reassessed afterwards.
What this code means
A fault in the circuit through which the climate control system asks the engine module for the air conditioning compressor.
The word "request" is doing real work here, and understanding it prevents a common and expensive misdiagnosis: the climate control panel does not switch the compressor on. It asks. The engine control module decides, and it can refuse.
Why it refuses. An air conditioning compressor is a substantial mechanical load — enough to be felt as a power loss on a small engine. So the module withholds it in several ordinary situations:
- During hard acceleration, briefly, to return that power to the wheels.
- When the engine is running hot, because the condenser sits in front of the radiator and adds heat to the air passing through it.
- At very low idle, or during a cold start, until the engine is stable enough to carry the load.
- When refrigerant pressure is outside its safe range, which is the protection described at P2515 and P2518.
The consequence for anyone paying for repairs is the important part. "The air conditioning does not work" is frequently not an air conditioning fault at all. If this circuit is broken, the panel is asking and the engine module never hears the question — so the refrigerant charge, the compressor, the clutch and the condenser can all be in perfect order while nothing happens. A regas or a compressor quoted on the strength of "no cold air" would fix nothing here, and this code is the evidence for saying so.
The fault itself is usually a wire, a connector or the switch in the panel, all of which are inexpensive compared with anything in the refrigerant circuit.
