Faulty exhaust pressure control solenoid
The solenoid operating an exhaust pressure control valve — a butterfly in the exhaust used to raise backpressure deliberately. Deliberately restricting the exhaust sounds wrong and is not: it is how a diesel warms up quickly, raises exhaust temperature for aftertreatment, and on some vehicles provides engine braking.
Its failure direction decides the symptom. Stuck open, the valve never restricts, so warm-up is slow, cabin heat is poor and the particulate filter struggles to reach regeneration temperature — a set of complaints that look unrelated to each other. Stuck closed is a genuine restriction and produces a severe power loss with high backpressure, which reads exactly like a blocked catalytic converter.
Separate the solenoid from the valve it drives. Circuit codes — open, low, high — are the winding and the harness; performance codes with a sound circuit mean the valve is not moving. Carbon and corrosion on the spindle are what hold it, since the valve lives in the exhaust stream. Check the valve moves freely by hand with the actuator disconnected before condemning the solenoid.
