P2169: Exhaust Pressure Regulator Vent Solenoid Control Circuit/Open

What to do

Not urgent, and nothing is being damaged. Expect slow warm-up and a weak heater on short cold journeys, and slightly higher fuel use until it is repaired — the exhaust valve has simply stopped restricting, which is the safe direction for it to fail. Worth fixing before winter rather than during it. If the vehicle uses the same valve for exhaust braking, you may also notice less engine braking on long descents.

What this code means

An open circuit in the solenoid that vents the exhaust pressure regulator's actuator. The subject changes completely here — the five codes before this one are about the accelerator, and this one is about the exhaust.

What an exhaust pressure regulator is for. A diesel engine at light load runs cool, because it is throttled by fuel rather than by air and always has more air than it needs. That is a problem in cold weather: the engine takes a long time to reach operating temperature, the cabin heater has nothing to give, and the aftertreatment system may never get hot enough to work. So a valve in the exhaust deliberately restricts the flow, raising back pressure and making the engine work harder against its own exhaust. The waste heat is the point.

Why there is a separate vent solenoid. The valve is usually held by a pneumatic actuator, and the vent solenoid is what releases it — energised to hold, vented to let the valve return. That arrangement is deliberate: lose power to the solenoid and the actuator vents, which opens the exhaust. The failure direction is chosen so that a fault cannot leave the exhaust obstructed, because a stuck-closed exhaust restriction is a serious matter and a stuck-open one is merely a cold cabin.

So the consequence of this code is usually mild and seasonal. With the circuit open the regulator stays out of the way: the engine warms slowly, the heater is disappointing on short winter journeys, and fuel consumption rises a little while cold. Nothing is at risk. The complaint that brings the car in is very often the heater rather than the lamp.

Some vehicles use the same valve for exhaust braking, in which case the second symptom is that engine braking on descents is noticeably weaker than the driver is used to.
