Seized transfer case shift mechanism
The mechanism moving the transfer case between ranges, seized so the commanded shift cannot complete. The motor or actuator is usually healthy and the mechanism it drives is not, which is the distinction the codes cannot make — the module commands a change, the position feedback does not arrive, and it reports the actuator.
Corrosion and disuse are the cause far more often than wear. A transfer case shifted into low range once a year, on a vehicle used mostly on tarmac, seizes in the position it has sat in. So the fault is often discovered at exactly the moment the range is needed, which is a genuinely useful thing to tell an owner: exercising the system periodically is what prevents it.
A failed attempt can leave it worse than before. A mechanism that has moved partway and jammed between ranges may leave the vehicle with no drive at all, so a shift that does not complete should not be repeatedly retried. Check whether the actuator can be driven by hand or with the manufacturer's procedure, and inspect the shift fork and rail — a bent fork or a worn collar produces the same code and is a different, internal repair.
