P279B: Transfer Case Gear Low Incorrect Ratio

Stop and complete the shift properly before driving on. Follow the handbook's range-shift procedure exactly — usually stationary or at walking pace with the transmission in neutral — and let the case land fully in one range. If it will not complete, drive gently in whatever range it holds and have it inspected soon: a case half-engaged or jumping ranges under load can lock the driveline, and that is not a fault to discover at speed.

What this code means

The transfer case was commanded into low range and its measured ratio says it is not there.

The transfer case is the second gearbox a four-wheel drive carries. It splits drive between the axles and, in most off-road-capable systems, offers two ranges — high for the road, low for crawling — plus in some designs a neutral that disconnects both. Inside are a reduction gearset, a shift mechanism, and very commonly a chain carrying drive to the front axle.

The module checks that a commanded range shift actually happened. It compares speeds into and out of the case; the arithmetic must equal the ratio of the range selected. This code says it does not — the case is not delivering the ratio the module asked for.

A half-completed shift is the ordinary cause. Range changes need the driveline unloaded: commanded on the move or under torque, the engagement dogs can land on top of each other and the actuator stalls part-way, leaving the case between ranges. That is why the handbook's procedure — stationary or below walking pace, transmission in neutral where specified — is not ceremony. A shift that never fully lands reads as the wrong ratio ever after.

A slipping chain is the wear cause, and the expensive one. A stretched chain jumps under load: a metallic slap, a momentary loss of drive under hard acceleration, and a ratio that flickers wrong exactly when torque is applied. Caught early it is a chain; ignored, the debris finds everything else in the case.
