B002A: Right Curtain Deployment Control 2

What to do

Get this looked at promptly, and do not attempt it yourself. An airbag fault usually means the whole restraint system has switched itself off, so the airbags and pretensioners may not fire in a crash — the car drives normally and is far less able to protect you. Never probe airbag wiring with a multimeter: the current an ordinary meter uses can set off the charge. This needs a workshop with the right equipment and the correct disable procedure.

What this code means

The deployment loop for the right curtain airbag, second inflator is faulty.

Side impacts allow far less room and far less time than frontal ones, and that shapes everything about these devices.

In a frontal crash there is a metre of car between the occupant and whatever was hit, and roughly fifty milliseconds to react. In a side impact there is a door — perhaps twenty centimetres — and the airbag must be fully inflated in around fifteen milliseconds. That is faster than a nerve signal travels from hand to brain.

So side airbags are smaller, harder and quicker, and their sensors are mounted in the doors and B-pillars rather than at the front of the car, because a central sensor would learn about the impact too late.

A curtain airbag is a different device again. It drops from the roof rail to cover the window opening, and its job is not only impact protection — it is designed to stay inflated for several seconds, unlike a frontal bag which deflates almost immediately, because it is also there to keep occupants inside the vehicle during a rollover.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
