P0642: Sensor Reference Voltage A Circuit Low

What to do

Expect reduced power. The same caution as P0641 applies — several sensors reporting faults at once share one supply, so do not agree to replace them individually before the reference voltage itself has been measured.

What this code means

Reference voltage A is below its expected value rather than absent. Almost always something is loading the circuit down — a sensor that has failed short internally, or a reference wire touching ground somewhere in the harness.

The unplugging procedure from P0641 applies directly and is the fastest route to the answer: disconnect sensors on the affected reference one at a time and watch for the voltage to recover. Whichever disconnection restores it identifies the culprit.

As always with this family, the several sensor codes stored alongside are consequences, not causes.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
