P0641: Sensor Reference Voltage A Circuit Open

What to do

Expect significantly reduced power — with throttle and pedal sensors affected, the module cannot trust the driver's request and limits the engine deliberately. If several sensor faults are stored at once, do not authorise replacing them individually. They share a power supply, and a single shorted sensor or damaged wire makes all of them report faults. Ask specifically whether the five-volt reference circuit was measured.

What this code means

The module's sensor reference voltage supply A has failed. This is the code in the P06xx block most worth understanding properly, because of how comprehensively it misleads.

Most analogue sensors on an engine do not carry their own power — the module supplies a precise regulated voltage, conventionally five volts, and the sensor returns a fraction of it proportional to what it measures. One reference circuit typically supplies several sensors at once. Throttle position, accelerator pedal, manifold pressure, fuel rail pressure and others commonly share reference A.

So when that reference collapses, every sensor on it reports nonsense simultaneously, and the scan tool shows four or five sensor faults at once. Every one of those sensors is healthy. Replacing them — and people do, sometimes several before the pattern is noticed — changes nothing, because the fault is the supply they share.

The diagnostic that resolves it: measure the reference voltage at any affected sensor's connector. If it is low or absent, unplug the sensors on that circuit one at a time. When the reference recovers, the sensor just unplugged is the one shorting it down. If the reference stays low with everything unplugged, the fault is the wiring or the module.

That procedure takes minutes and replaces a great deal of guesswork.
