P0C78: Hybrid/EV Battery System Precharge Time Too Long

The likeliest single cause is the precharge resistor, which is a small and comparatively cheap component — so ask whether it was measured before anything larger is quoted. Expect the car to refuse to power up rather than to drive poorly; that is the sequence being abandoned rather than an additional fault.

What precharge is and why it is timed are at P0C77. Too long is the commoner direction and the less alarming one: the capacitors are filling slowly, which means either less current is reaching them or more is leaking away.

The precharge resistor is the usual answer. These run hot by design — absorbing the inrush is exactly their job — and they drift upward in value as they age, or crack. A resistor that has gone high stretches the precharge until the module gives up. The other reading is a leakage path: something downstream drawing current the capacitors should be receiving, which overlaps with the isolation faults and is the more serious branch.

The car's response is usually to abandon the sequence and refuse to close the contactors, so the symptom is a vehicle that will not power up rather than one that drives badly.
