P2174: Throttle Actuator Control System — Sudden Low Air Flow Detected
What to do
Ask for the intake ducting and the air filter housing to be opened and looked into, not just tested. An abrupt loss of airflow means something is physically restricting the intake, and that includes objects drawn in — nesting material, a rag left after previous work, a bag pulled against the inlet. It is worth finding before the engine is worked hard again. Drive gently until it has been checked.
What this code means
Far less air reached the engine than the throttle position called for, and the shortfall arrived abruptly.
The mechanism is under P2172; this is the same comparison failing in the opposite direction. An abrupt loss of airflow is a restriction that was not there a moment ago, and the list of things that can do that is short and physical: a throttle plate jammed part-closed, an intake duct that has collapsed under depression, a filter panel that has shifted and blocked the inlet, or something drawn into the intake.
The last of those is the one to name explicitly, because it is the only entry in this family that can destroy an engine. A rodent nest, a shop rag, a loose piece of trim or a plastic bag pulled against the inlet will all produce this code, and anything that can be drawn further in should be found before the engine is asked to work hard again. A workshop needs to be told the code exists so it looks in the ducting rather than starting at the sensor.
The driver's experience is usually unambiguous — an engine that simply will not pull, often with a reduced power mode engaged. That is the module doing the right thing: it cannot deliver the requested torque and stops pretending it can.
