P272A: Transmission Range Select Motor Control Circuit
What to do
Always apply the parking brake when you park — do not rely on P. The car may not be able to engage or confirm the park lock. When parking, come to a full stop, apply the parking brake, and only then select P; doing it in that order takes the vehicle's weight off the park mechanism and is worth the habit on a slope. Get it diagnosed promptly.
What this code means
The transmission range select motor control circuit has a fault.
Shift-by-wire replaced the cable from the gear lever with a motor and a conversation.
The lever is now a switch that requests a range, and a motor on the transmission moves the manual valve or selector drum to match. There is no mechanical path from your hand to the gearbox — which is what allows a rotary dial or a set of buttons instead of a lever, and what means the car must confirm every selection electrically.
A control circuit fault means the module cannot drive the motor reliably, which on shift-by-wire is a failure of the only path between the driver's selection and the gearbox. Expect the car to refuse to leave P, or to refuse to enter it — both of which are the system failing safe.
Check the connector and harness before the motor. The assembly sits on the transmission where it takes heat, vibration and road spray, and its connector is a common point of failure.
Use the parking brake every time while this is stored, and do not assume the car is held by P.

Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.
What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
