What to do
Have the battery and its connections tested first, genuinely. It sounds far too simple for a fault described as a clock problem, and it is still the right first step: a flat battery, a jump start or a deep discharge disturbs the timekeeping a module keeps while the car is switched off, and that is where most of these come from.
Mention any recent work, especially a software update, a battery change or a period with the battery disconnected. This code turns up after all three.
Two practical consequences worth knowing. The car may fail an emissions test even though it runs perfectly, because the self-checks are timed and cannot complete. And the battery may go flat over a quiet week, because a module that mistimes its own sleep can keep the car partly awake.
If a page of unrelated warnings appeared at the same time, expect most of them to go when this is fixed.
What this code means
A control module's internal clock is not keeping time properly. The reasoning that makes this whole range different from the other network families is at U3000, and it applies here: this is a module reporting a problem with its own foundations rather than with something it watches.
A module's clock sounds like a convenience and is not. It is what lets a module schedule its own sleep and wake, decide how long the vehicle has been standing, time a drive cycle, and stamp a fault with when it happened. Several things that owners care about are built on it:
- Emissions readiness. Monitors run over defined periods and after defined soak times. A module that cannot time a soak never decides the engine is cold enough to test, so the monitor never runs and readiness never completes — the vehicle fails a test on an unfinished self-check while running perfectly.
- Regeneration and service intervals, which are counted in time as well as distance.
- Freeze frames. A fault recorded with a nonsense timestamp is much harder to relate to what the driver actually experienced.
- Sleep. A module that mistimes its own wake can keep the car partly awake, and that shows up as a battery going flat over a quiet week.
Where it comes from is usually the supply rather than the silicon. A battery disconnection, a jump start, a deep discharge, or a voltage sag during a software update all disturb the timekeeping a module maintains across power-down. That is why this code turns up so often after workshop work — and why the first check is the battery and its connections, exactly as the rest of this range advises.
A note on order. If this code appears alongside a page of unrelated faults, treat it as one of the causes rather than one of the symptoms. Clearing the others first produces them again.
