Fault appeared after recent work on the car
The car came back from a service, a repair or a part change and something new is wrong — often unrelated to whatever was being done. This is not a coincidence often enough to be worth saying out loud, and it is not usually an accusation either: a connector unplugged and not fully seated, a loom pushed against a bracket it now rubs on, an earth left off, or a module fitted and not coded all produce faults that look nothing like the job. Say what was done and when, even if it seems irrelevant — the previous job is the single most useful clue on a car that was fine last week, and it is the one a scan tool cannot show.

What this usually means
This is not a coincidence often enough to be worth saying out loud, and it is not usually an accusation either. A connector unplugged and not fully seated, a loom pushed against a bracket it now rubs on, an earth left off, or a module fitted and not coded all produce faults that look nothing like the job that was done.
The reason the new fault seems unrelated is structural. Almost any job means disturbing wiring that has sat undisturbed for years, and a connector that has been mated once and left slightly proud fails differently from one that was never touched — often intermittently, and often at a component nowhere near the work.
So the previous job is the single most useful clue on a car that was fine last week, and it is the one a scan tool cannot show. Say what was done and when, even if it seems irrelevant. A garage told about a cambelt change last month diagnoses in an hour what takes a day without that sentence.
Four failure shapes cover most of it. A connector not fully latched, which a firm push confirms in seconds. A harness routed differently on reassembly, now resting against something that will chafe through it — the fault of the future rather than of today. An earth left off or trapped under paint, which produces implausible readings across several systems at once. And a component fitted without the coding, calibration or adaptation it needs, which is a procedure rather than a part and gets skipped constantly.
Do not clear codes before reading them. The freeze-frame data attached to a fault that set during or just after the work is the closest thing to a witness statement anybody is going to get.
