Alfa Romeo's 1.75 turbocharged four — the 960A — in the 4C and the Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde.

The displacement is deliberate. 1750 was Alfa's own designation in the 1960s and the modern engine was sized to reclaim it — a marketing decision that produced an unusual capacity, and one worth knowing when a parts search returns nothing for 1.8.

In the 4C it is an all-aluminium engine mounted amidships behind the cabin, which changes every access assumption: heat soak is real, and routine work is harder than on the Giulietta's transverse installation.

Its known items are the ordinary direct-injection turbo set — intake-valve carbon at mileage, and a turbocharger whose life tracks oil condition — with the mid-engined car's heat making the second matter more.

It is a low-volume engine and specialist experience is correspondingly thin outside the dealer network.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
