Also known as: 4.0 straight-six, amc 242, erh, 4.0 inline-6, jeep 4.0

The 4.0-litre straight-six that AMC designed and Jeep kept for twenty years — the engine of the XJ Cherokee, TJ Wrangler and early Grand Cherokee, and one of the most durable petrol engines ever put in a mass-market vehicle.

Its reputation is genuinely earned: a cast-iron block and head, seven main bearings, modest output and low stress. Engines running past 300,000 miles are unremarkable. The diagnostic consequence is that a running fault on a 4.0 is almost never internal — it is the crankshaft position sensor, the ignition coil rail, a vacuum leak, or the notoriously corrosion-prone earth straps and connectors of the vehicles it sat in.

What it does have is a known cylinder-head casting problem on 2000–2001 engines (the 0331 casting), which cracks between the valve seats and leaks coolant into a cylinder. That is worth identifying by casting number rather than by symptom, because it presents as a head gasket failure and is not one.

1 generation, across 1 make. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
